AR-FX IWLA ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP In 1993, the Board of Directors of the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America established its Environmental Sciences scholarship as a means of demonstrating the Chapter’s concern for the environment and for the young people of the tri-county (Arlington, Fairfax and Prince William) area. The purpose of the scholarship program, as stated by the President of the Chapter when the program was begun, was to "help insure the continued involvement of the rising generations in protection and improvement of the environment.” At the inception of the scholarship, the program was set-up to support a student for up to 4 years at a value of $750 per student per year paid directly to the applicant’s institution of higher learning in support of their degree in Environmental Sciences or a related field. In 1999 the Board of Directors agreed to increase the value of the scholarship to $3,000 per student per year. In 2014, the Board of Directors approved increasing the value of the scholarship to $5,000 per student per year beginning in 2015. The scholarship committee of the Chapter reviews the applications submitted each April and makes its recommendation to the Board of Directors on the basis of the applicant’s academic achievement, financial need, environmental activities and achievements and the individual character of the applicant.
